Lava Lamps

Option 1

Equipment:

  • Glass Jar (in your Activity Bag)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food colouring (in your Activity Bag)
  • ‘Fizz tablet’ (Antacid tablets) (in your Activity Bag)
  • Glitter (optional) (in your Activity Bag)

Step 1:

Gather your ingredients!

Step 2:

Fill your jar(s) about 2/3 of the way with oil.

You can experiment with more and less and see which one gives the best results. Make sure to keep track of your results.
This is a great way to turn a science activity into an experiment.

How else can you change up this lava lamp science experiment? What if you didn’t add oil at all?  Or what if you change the temperature of the water?  What would happen?

Step 3:

Next, you want to fill your jar(s) the rest of the way with water. These steps are great for helping kids hone fine motor skills and learn about approximate measurements. We eyeballed our liquids, but you can actually measure out your liquids.

Make sure to observe what happens to the oil and water in your jars as you add them.

Step 4:

Add drops of food coloring to your oil and water and watch what happens. However don’t mix the colors into the liquids. It’s ok if you do, but I love how the coming chemical reaction looks if you don’t mix them!

Step 5:

Add your ‘Fizz tablet’ and watch what happens. 🙂

Option 2

Equipment:

  • Glass Jar (in your Activity Bag)
  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food colouring (in your Activity Bag)
  • ‘Fizz tablet’ (Antacid tablets) (in your Activity Bag)
  • Glitter (optional) (in your Activity Bag)

Step 1:

Fill about 1/3 of your jars with water. Add vegetable oil leaving some room at the top to make sure the mixture doesn’t bubble over.

Step 2:

Add your food coloring, as much as you want (feel free to mix up the colors).

Step 3:

Add glitter. This is optional, but adds an extra visual and sparkly element kids love.

Step 4:

Add your antacid tablets. Go slow at first, one by one to watch the bubbles appear. Then you can add a couple at a time and watch the bubbles go fast and furious!

You can turn off the lights and shine a torch into the jar to watch the cool effects in the dark. This was fascinating to watch
